Our Education Birds: Rusty

Rusty is an Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio). As you can see, she is missing her left eye; she suffered this injury after colliding with a vehicle.

Because of her weight (averaging about 7 ounces) we think Rusty is a female Eastern Screech-Owl. Like all female raptors, she is larger than male birds of the same species. Rusty lives in the Raptor Center's enclosed loft flight cage, which she used to share with Otus. She has no trouble zipping around the cage on her strong wings. Rusty is also a vocal screech-owl; when we collect her for programs, she often hoots at us.
